Reselling Classic Skateboard Decks

Guide For Reselling Classic Skateboards Into Profit

This guide is for you if you’re looking to turn your passion for classic skateboards into profit. We’ll delve into the world of reselling classic skateboards, exploring what makes them valuable and how to navigate the classic skateboards market.

Classic skateboards are decks from bygone eras, often the 80s, 90s, or early 2000s. These relics hold a special place in the hearts of collectors, sometimes sparking nostalgic memories or representing a particular skateboarding era. Take me, for example: growing up skating in the early 2000s, I became a big fan of the skateboards from that era, mostly from Think, Rhythm, and 5boro skateboards.

Reselling classic skateboards can be a profitable business. But it’s more than just a quick profit of the nostalgic skate products, it’s more about the connection between classic skateboard collectors and a piece of skateboarding history.

Tips for Reselling Classic Skateboards

  1. Research: To maximize profits in the classic skateboard market, research is key. Explore online forums (like Slap Forums), classic skateboard blogs, auction sites (like eBay), and social media groups dedicated to these boards. This will help you understand what’s currently in demand.
  2. Check Trends: The classic skateboard market, like any collectibles market, experiences shifting trends. Look at what classic skateboard collectors are currently looking for at skateboard forums or social media groups.

3. List where to look Classic Skateboards:  Where to find these nostalgic skateboards? Check our list below:

  • Auction Websites (eBay): A classic online marketplace for classic skateboard collectors.
  • Social Media (Facebook Marketplace/Groups): Someone in your area might be selling a nostalgic piece of skateboard history.
  • Garage Sales & Flea Markets: A classic skateboard can be purchased here for a very good price.
  • Skate Shops: There’s a few skate shops that may have stocks of decade old products at the back.

4. Quality Matters:  The state of your classic skateboard significantly impacts its value. Brand new or mint condition skateboards fetch higher prices, while well-loved boards will have a lower market value.

5. Authenticity Check: With high demand for classic skateboards comes the risk of encountering replicas. Scrutinize serial numbers, brand markings, and any details that might indicate a fake.

6. Connect with Collectors:  Connect with other skateboard collectors.  Their expertise can provide valuable insights into the most sought-after decks, and they themselves might be potential buyers willing to pay a premium for your classic skateboard finds.

7. Collector Preference:  Collector preferences play a key role.  Are they drawn to the early days of skateboarding in the 70s? Perhaps it’s the 80s and 90s that resonate with them, or even the 2000s.  Similar to my own experience with my early 2000s DC shoe collection (I was a big fan of those puffy shoes), classic skateboard collectors often seek decks from their own skateboarding eras, a time period they have a personal connection with.

8. Other Classic Parts:  Research what specific parts classic skateboard collectors look for.  Offer a variety of these parts, such as Independent trucks from the 1980s or decks with vintage graphics, to increase your profits when reselling classic skateboards.

How to Resell Classic Skateboards

  1. Choose Your Platform: Will you resell your classic skateboards on a website, social media platforms, or online marketplace websites? While wider reach is a benefit, consider listing and commission fees when deciding where to list your products.
  2. Presentation is Key: Capture high-quality photos of your classic skateboard’s details using good lighting and a plain background. This will make your board’s (unique/eye-catching) graphics stand out. Time to get that Rob Roskopp Screaming Hand pop out on that photo!
  3. Detailed Descriptions: Write accurate and honest descriptions, disclosing any minor scratches or wear. A well-written description not only helps sell the item but also avoids future issues with buy
  4. Prompt Replies: Build trust and create a positive experience for potential buyers by replying quickly to their inquiries.
  5. Secure Packaging:  Ensure your classic skateboard arrives safely with proper cushioning (foam, bubble wrap) in a sturdy box (or potentially a double box for extra protection).  This keeps even a collectible Hosoi Hammerhead board safe.
  6. Ship it Out: Choose a reliable shipping method (USPS, Fedex, etc.) and schedule a carrier pickup if needed.  Send your classic skateboard to the buyer and keep them updated with tracking information throughout the process.  Finally, thank the customer for their support

Reselling classic skateboards can be a rewarding experience.  Remember, as market trends evolve, some classic skateboard decks or products might take time to find the perfect collector. But with patience, knowledge, and a passion for skateboarding history, you can reach your way to success in the world of classic skateboard reselling.
